New 'Friends of Libya' meet in New York Sept 20: French FM
The United Nations will host a new "Friends of Libya" meeting in New York on September 20, French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said Saturday.
"The United Nations will play a leading role in the process (to reconstruct Libya), a meeting is scheduled on September 20 in New York with the group of the Friends of Libya," Juppe said during talks between European Union foreign ministers in Poland.
In Paris last week, world leaders meeting under the banner of the group unblocked $15 billion in funds to help Libya's victorious rebels rebuild their shattered country.
Juppe, along with EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, pledged the EU would continue to provide aid to help rebuild Libya, notably for humanitarian and security purposes as well as boosting the rule of law.
At the Paris meeting, held 42 years to the day since Moamer Kadhafi took power in a coup, senior envoys from over 60 countries also put the leaders of the rebels' National Transitional Council (NTC) on notice to pursue a path of reconciliation and democracy.
