PARIS, July 12 (AFP) - Raymond Domenech was named to succeed Jacques Santini as the new France football coach on Monday.

The 52-year-old Domenech has been France Under 21 coach since 1993.

Santini left to become Tottenham manager when French football federation president Claude Simonet refused to extend his contract before Euro 2004.

Domenech beat World Cup defender Laurent Blanc and former Monaco and Fulham manager Jean Tigana for the job.

Domenech, a fierce-tackling full-back with Lyon, won eight caps between 1973 and 1979.

His only coaching experience before taking over as Under-21 coach was to win the Second Division with Lyon.

Tigana, a member of the marvellous France midfield of the 1980s led by Michel Platini, had been backed by Platini, now a federation vice-president.

Former Manchester United defender Blanc, 38, had no previous coaching experience.

Former England and Tottenham manager Glenn Hoddle also applied for the job.
