PARIS, April 9 (AFP) - League leaders Lyon were held to a 2-2 draw by Nantes on Saturday but remain on course for an unprecedented fourth successive French title.

Lyon, who rested several key players ahead of the second leg of their Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday which is locked at 1-1, opened the scoring through Pierre-Alain Frau.

But Nantes, lying 15th in the league, hit back with goals by Mauro Cetto and Mamadou Bagayoko in the 45th and 63rd minutes.

With seven minutes of the game remaining, and Lyon looking set for a third league defeat, Frau equalised to ensure a 14-point lead over Lille and Marseille, locked on 52 points.

"We were inconsistent," said Lyon coach Paul Le Guen. "But it's a result that suits us and that we're happy to take before heading off to Eindhoven."

The game was played under the shadow of the death of two Lyon supporters in a bus accident.

Marseille went down to a 1-0 loss to mid-table Strasbourg, who scored thanks to a strike by Senegal's Mamadou Niang deep into injury time.

Goalkeeper Fabien Barthez was impressive throughout but was ultimately unable to prevent the Alsace side from maintaining a record of having lost only once to their visitors on home soil in their last 10 meetings.

Lille, who are second on goal difference, face fourth-placed Monaco, on 50 points, later in the week.

Fifth-placed Rennes scored a crucial 2-0 away win at Toulouse. Swiss striker Alexander Frei and Swede Kim Kallstrom were the scorers.

In a congested pack of clubs, Sochaux suffered a shock 2-0 loss to bottom club Istres, who recorded only their fourth win in 32 games.

Saint-Etienne swept strugglers Bastia aside in a 3-0 win which included two late goals by Pascal Feindouno and Frederic Piquionne.

Metz notched up a 1-0 win over Caen, Bartholomew Ogbeche finding the back of the net, while PSG drew with Bordeaux 1-1.

Lens posted a goalless draw with Nice.
