PARIS (AFP) — Move over Gavin and Charlotte and Mike and Zara because there's a new golden rugby couple on the block - Sergio and Alexandra.

Never heard of them?

Charlotte Church

The World Cup may have been deprived of celebrity Welsh couple Gavin Henson and singer Charlotte Church, as well as England's Mike Tindall and royal girlfriend Zara Phillips, but there's still plenty of fodder for the paparazzi.

Step forward beefcake Italian forward Sergio Parisse and stunning girlfriend Alexandra Rosenfeld, a former Miss France and Miss Europe.

Unlike their footballing equivalents, whose credit cards suffered grievous bodily harm in the bars and boutiques of Baden-Baden at last summer's football World Cup, rugby wives and girlfriends prefer to be a more discreet breed.

They also have a different name.

Where once there were WAGS, these girls are Scrummies.

Twenty-year-old Alexandra is carving out a career as a sports journalist with a French cable channel.

"I did athletics for 10 years but I have loved football since I was very small," she said.

"I played with my club for two years and I went to all the home matches of Marseille with my father who is a coach. I wanted to become a sports teacher but sports journalism isn't so bad."

The British teams maybe having a torrid time in France, but when things go pear-shaped the players know they can find grace rather than gossip when they get home.

Kate Vickery married England skipper Phil in 2006 and they have a two-year-old daughter.

But she couldn't be further removed from Posh Spice, the wife of former England captain David Beckham.

"It'll be fun to go out with the girls for a group dinner, but it's going to be more a case of a coffee or a nice meal than late nights in bars," Mrs Vickery told the Daily Telegraph on the eve of the World Cup.

Ireland, who are facing World Cup elimination, have plenty of brains as well as beauty amongst their Scrummies.

Lucie Silvas is the fiancee of Geordan Murphy and is a successful singer-songwriter while Aileen Clancy, the wife of David Wallace, runs her own dog-grooming business.

Perma-tanned Henson, the Welsh centre who is sitting out his second World Cup because of injury, has been watching the tournament at home with Church where they have been kept busy by the arrival of their first child last week.

Despite the couple's absence, the Welsh still have plenty of glamour up in the stands in France although the wives and girlfriends shudder at the mention of WAGS.

"I don't like the term WAG," said Sam Williams, the wife of flanker Martyn.

"I'm too old for that. I don't feel like a WAG when I'm doing the housework but if I had a nanny and I could live like that, I would.

"But the best thing about being a rugby player's wife is meeting the other girls for lunch and drinks."
