France deployed "more than 15 aircraft" that took part in ground strikes on Sunday, said a spokesman for the military's general staff, Colonel Thierry Burkhard.

"More than 15 aircraft were engaged, representing a wide range of (French) air-to-air and air-to-ground capabilities," Burkhard told a news conference.

He said the planes had conducted "air defence (operations) and ground support, refuelling, air surveillance and detection."

"For air operations, the effort of the day has focused on ground strikes," he said.
