MONTPELLIER - Seven people were hurt, two critically, in an explosion in a block of student flats at Montpellier University early Wednesday, fire services and police said.
It was not immediately known what caused the blast but police said they were looking into whether it was set off by the handling of explosive materials.
The explosion, which happened around 4h20, badly damaged the flat and the 100 occupants of the building were evacuated.
The injured were taken to the nearby university hospital. Fire fighters did not give any details of their injuries but said the prognosis for one of the two most seriously hurt victims was poor.
