CANNES, France, May 18, 2007 (AFP) - Moby set 1,500 people thumping their feet and pumping fists in the air at one of the first parties at the Cannes film festival.

The US DJ's techno music filled a large tented space in a beachside casino set up by the Paris nightclub VIP Room, with dancers in miniscule bikinis gyrating at poles and muscle-men posing on stage.

The soiree, held after the festival's opening ceremony, was one of several launching the whirlwind of socialising and promotion that fill Cannes during its 12-day run May 16-27.

This year's party circuit is more packed than usual, with the festival -- the world's top showcase for cinema -- celebrating its 60th year.

Among celebrities expected to put in nocturnal appearances are U2 singer Bono, George Clooney, Sylvester Stallone and Quentin Tarantino.
