PARIS (AFP) - An Irishman who disappeared from his Paris hotel nearly two months ago during the rugby world cup has turned up at a police station and told officers he was beaten and held prisoner, police said Tuesday.

Businessman John Kennelly, 47, went missing on the morning of September 9 after leaving the Meridian Hotel in the west of Paris, where he had been staying with his family, to go for a walk.

Police turned up nothing but on Monday morning Kelly walked into a northeast Paris police station, saying he had been held captive and assaulted.

Marks were found on his body during a medical exam, according to a police source, but doctors were not able to determine their origins.

Police were continuing to question him Tuesday to try to reconstruct his whereabouts during his disappearance.
