BERLIN, March 12, 2007 (AFP) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday paid tribute to French President Jacques Chirac as a trusted ally after he announced that he would not seek re-election next month.

"The Chancellor cherishes Jacques Chirac as a reliable, trustworthy partner," Merkel's spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm said.

"During his presidency the ties between Germany and France developed further still. The good relations between Germany and France bear his hallmark," he said.

Wilhelm said Merkel believed that Chirac's efforts to foster close ties with Berlin "was clearly driven by a deep personal conviction" and that this had helped Europe become "better prepared to face the future."

Chirac announced his decision to bow out of French politics after more than 40 years in an address on Sunday in which he said he would not seek a third presidential term.

Germany and France are often described as the "motor" of the European Union.
