The national leaders of Germany and France will meet on the Greek debt crisis with the president of the European Union ahead of a crunch EU summit on Thursday, diplomats told AFP.

Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou may also join the informal talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and EU president Herman Van Rompuy, the diplomats said.

"This meeting is being organised at the request of the German chancellor," one diplomat said.

European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso may also take part in talks which will be held as EU leaders come under US pressure to contain a debt crisis that has sparked fears of a global spillover on financial markets.
