PARIS, April 1 (AFP) - The archbishop of Paris Andre Vingt-Trois is to hold a special mass for the ailing pope on Friday evening at Notre Dame cathedral, his office said.

The archbishop also called on churches in his diocese to conduct special prayers for John Paul II, who appeared to be close to death at the Vatican.

"This morning we have learned of a serious aggravation of the pope's condition. As John Paul II made a pilgrimage last summer to Lourdes, we entrust him to the intervention of Our Lady of Lourdes," Vingt-Trois said.

Thousands of tourists were queuing as normal to see round the mediaeval cathedral in central Paris Friday morning, and there were few signs of concern at the pope's condition.

"We heard that he was in a pretty bad way. Maybe we'll say a prayer when we get in," said Kevin Dunne, a visitor from the United States.
