PARIS, Aug 21, 2007 (AFP) - A man armed with a knife burst into a Sonia Rykiel luxury fashion boutique in Paris on Tuesday and threatened shop employees, police said.

Police blocked off the area around Re du Faubourg Saint Honore where the world's top fashion houses have their shops in central Paris, not far from the Elysee presidential palace.

It remained unclear whether the man, who stepped into the shop shortly after 4:00 pm (1400 GMT), was holding the employees hostage.

A shop employee reached by phone by AFP confirmed that "an armed man is sitting in the boutique" and said he was "more or less threatening".
