LONDON, February 25, 2008 - A former nightclub bouncer who "hated blonde
women" was found guilty Monday of murdering two students in London between
2001 and 2004.
Levi Bellfield, 39, was convicted of killing Amelie Delagrange, aged 22 and
from France, and Marsha McDonnell, a 19-year-old Briton, both of whom were hit
on the head with heavy objects near bus stops late at night.
He was also found guilty of the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy, then aged
18, who Bellfield left for dead after running her down in his car as she
returned from a night out celebrating her last day at school.
Police say they now want to question him over a string of other notorious
attacks, including the unsolved murder of 13-year-old Milly Dowler in 2002.
Bellfield used to trawl bus stops around London looking for young women,
often in cars and vans with blacked-out windows and carpets laid out in the
back, prosecutors said during the trial.
"He hated women. He hated blonde women," prosecutor Brian Altman told the
court, adding that the attacks were consistent "with someone who has great
animosity to women".
Sheedy held hands with relatives of Delagrange and McDonnell at the back of
the court and the group burst into tears and let out gasps of relief as the
verdict was announced.
Speaking afterwards, Detective Chief Inspector Colin Sutton said: "He
targeted his victims at random, attacking those much smaller and weaker than
"He refused to face what he had done, lied repeatedly to try and save his
skin and at all times treated his victims, their families and the authorities
with utter contempt."
The jury at the Old Bailey in London failed to reach verdicts in connection
with alleged attacks on two other women and prosecutors say they will not seek
Bellfield, who is six foot (1.8 metres) tall and weighed 20 stone (127
kilogrammes), is due to be sentenced Tuesday and faces life imprisonment.
