DRAGUIGNAN, France, Jan 20 (AFP) - The boyfriend of a 29 year-old British woman whose naked body was found on a beach in southern France in August 1993 was cleared Thursday on a charge of concealing her corpse.

Patrick Mercurio, 50, faced a year's suspended jail term and a EUR 10,000 (USD 13,000) fine if he had been convicted of wrongfully moving the body of Barbara Coll - a well-known figure in the nightclub scene in St Tropez.

An autopsy found that Coll died of natural causes after consuming large quantities of drugs and alcohol. Mercurio admitted to investigators that he drove her body from their yacht to a nearby beach and dumped it there.

A court official said Mercurio was cleared because "there was no evidence of homicide prior to the removal of the body."
