MANILA, Feb 22, 2007 (AFP) - Police at the Philippines' main international airport on Thursday arrested a Frenchman and pulled him off a plane after he made a joke about carrying a a bomb in his bag.

Michel Christian Joseph Brionne, 66, was arrested and whisked off the Cebu Pacific plane bound for Bangkok after he allegedly made several jokes to a stewardess and seatmate about a bomb in his hand-carried bag, airport police  said.

The pilot of the plane cancelled the takeoff and taxied the plane to the side of the runway for a security check after hearing about the jokes of the Frenchman.

Brionne, who was on his honeymoon with his new Filipina wife, later told police that people misheard him and that he was actually saying that he was carrying "a bunch of flowers."

He faces charges for making a false bomb threat and if convicted, could be jailed for two to three years and fined 10,000 pesos (207 dollars).

The Philippines, which has been hit by bomb attacks from Muslim extremists in recent years, has tightened security at airports and other transport centres.
