VALLETTA, June 13, 2007 (AFP) - Malta's tourist office has stopped using a picture of newly-elected French President Nicholas Sarkozy in its publicity material, the French embassy on the Mediterranean island said Wednesday.

The day after his election on May 6, and before taking up office, Sarkozy flew to Malta to board a yacht belonging to a wealthy friend for a short cruise.

"Like the President of the Republic, come and refresh yourself in Malta," said an advertising strapline on a French version of its website, showing a picture of a smiling Sarkozy.

"On Monday I called the Maltese tourism and culture minister to remark in the friendliest way that it was not customary to use the picture of a head of state for advertising purposes," French Ambassador Jean-Marc Rives told AFP by telephone.

The following day the offending image was removed from the website.

"It's part of an ambassador's job to watch out for this sort of thing," Rives said, adding he had acted on his own initiative.
