The maid at the center of the sexual assault allegations against IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn is living through "extraordinary" trauma, her lawyer said Tuesday.

"The world has been turned upside down for her," lawyer Jeff Shapiro told CNN, speaking after his client was allegedly attacked on Saturday by Strauss-Kahn at the plush Sofitel Hotel in Manhattan.

"This is a person who is a hard-working person who is a single mother and supporting a 15-year-old young woman, and they live together, and she was grateful to have a job, for which she could provide food and shelter for the two of them," Shapiro said.

"Since this has occurred, she has not been able to go home. She can't go back to work, and she has no idea what the future is going to be in any respect," he said, adding "the trauma that has taken place in her life is extraordinary."

Strauss-Kahn, the head of the International Monetary Fund and a leading French politician tipped as a presidential front-runner for 2012, was charged in the early hours of Sunday morning with sexual assault and attempted rape.

The 62-year-old IMF chief, who denies all charges, is in a New York jail awaiting a grand jury's decision on whether there is enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial. The next court hearing is scheduled for Friday.
