VILNIUS, Sept 2 (AFP) - Lithuania is ready to allow rock singer Bertrand Cantat, imprisoned in Vilnius for the murder of a French actress, to be transferred to France in September to serve the rest of his sentence, the justice ministry said Thursday.

"The justice ministry Wednesday received a letter from the French Justice Ministry with an agreement to receive Cantat and the required documents," the ministry's top spokesman, Dainius Radzevicius, said.   "

Cantat may be handed to France in September," he added.

Cantat, the 40-year-old lead singer of the group Noir Desir, was jailed for eight years on March 29 for beating his actress girlfriend Marie Trintignant to death during a row in a Vilnius hotel a year ago, in a case that received a great deal of attention in France.

In July Cantat filed a request to be allowed to continue serving his sentence in France.

Trintignant, the daughter of veteran French film star Jean-Louis Trintignant, had been in Vilnius to shoot a television movie about the French writer Colette, directed by her mother Nadine, when she was killed.
