Libyan rebels urge Europe to follow French recognition
The Libyan opposition on Thursday welcomed a move by France to recognise them as the country's rightful representatives and called on other European countries to follow suit.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy seized the initiative as the EU leadership hesitated to recognise the rebels, pending a summit to urgently discuss the conflict between loyalists of Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi and eastern rebels.
"France is playing the role of breaking the ice for the European Union. This is the first nail in the coffin of Kadhafi. We expect all Europe to follow," Mustafa Gheriani, a media organiser at the rebels' headquarters, told AFP.
