Libyan rebel leader to meet France's Sarkozy: presidency

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is to host Libya's rebel Transitional National Council leader Mustafa Abdel Jalil to discuss the country's transition to democracy, Sarkozy's office said.

France and its NATO allies have been bombing Libyan forces loyal to Moamer Kadhafi for the past month under the authority of a United Nations resolution.

France became the first country to recognise the TNC as the "legitimate representative" of the Libyan people on March 10 when Sarkozy received three of the council's representatives.

Abdel Jalil said in Italy on Tuesday after talks with Foreign Minister Franco Frattini that he would favour international ties "above all" with France, Italy and Qatar -- the countries that have recognised Libya's opposition.

Sarkozy will meet the opposition leader at the Elysee Palace in Paris at 12.00 am (1000 GMT), a statement said.
