PARIS, Feb 24 (AFP) - The French journalist Florence Aubenas and her translator Hussein Hanoun, who disappeared in Iraq 50 days ago, are alive, the head of Reporters without Borders said Thursday.

"According to the information we have received, there are tangible elements which lead us to believe they are still alive," said Robert Menard.

"They are probably being held outside Baghdad. Right now, by a loose and unidentified group. There's been no claim and there is no established intermediary," he said.

Aubenas works for the left-wing daily Liberation.
