Lemonchois sets record for Route de Rhum

POINTE-A-PITRE, Guadeloupe, Nov 6, 2006 (AFP) - Lionel Lemonchois of France won the Route du Rhum yachting classic here Monday setting a new record for the trans-Atlantic event in his trimaran Gitana XI.

POINTE-A-PITRE, Guadeloupe, Nov 6, 2006 (AFP) - Lionel Lemonchois of France won the Route du Rhum yachting classic here Monday setting a new record for the trans-Atlantic event in his trimaran Gitana XI.

The 46-year-old Lemonchois crossed the ocean between Saint Malo on the French Channel coast and the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe in seven days, 17 hours, 19 minutes and six seconds.

That smashed the previous mark set by Laurent Bourgnon in 1998 by over four days.

"It's a dream come true, especially with the talented sailors we had in competition this year" said Lemonchois.

Another Frenchman, Pascal Bidegorry, was expected to arrive later Monday in second place.
