PARIS, June 6 (AFP) - A new ready-to-wear fashion line by Karl Lagerfeld will be launched in the United States, the German couturier and his US outlet announced Monday in an American fashion magazine.

The new line for men and women will cost half the price of his designer collection Lagerfeld Gallery, launched in Paris in 1998.

Presented in February, the new line "will be young and spirited with denim, sportswear, Ts, tanks and jackets. It will be a full lifestyle assortment," said Ann Aciermo, head of business development at Tommy Hilfiger, the US group which controls the Lagerfeld label.

"Karl Lagerfeld is better for today's lifestyle. It's meant to be big. Gallery is something more intimate," Lagerfeld told Women's Wear Daily.

The new line will be tested exclusively for an initial period on the US market.

"My idea was always New York, Paris and Rome," Karl Lagerfeld explained referring to his collaboration with Chanel in Paris, Fendi in Rome and the new line which will be designed in New York.

"I'm very much into large distribution," said Lagerfeld. "With haute couture, I proved that I can design the most expensive things and with H&M the less expensive things. This will be in the middle of all that."

Tommy Hilfiger bought the labels of Karl Lagerfeld in December including the Lagerfeld Gallery and a collection under license for men.
