PARIS, Jan 27 (AFP) - The French construction materials group Lafarge, a world leader, said on Thursday that sales had risen by 5.7 percent in 2004, and expressed confidence about prospects this year.

Reporting 2004 sales of EUR 14.44 billion (USD 18.77 billion), the group said it was standing by a forecast that 2004 operating profit would show growth exceeding 10 percent, excluding the effects of changes in exchange rates.

Managing director Bernard Kasriel said that for 2005 "we are confident that our markets will continue on a favourable trend".

On a basis of constant exchange rates, sales in 2004 had risen by 7.7 percent. Sales in 2003 amounted to EUR 13.66 billion.

Changes in exchange rates had cut sales by EUR 442 million or by 3.5 percent.
