BISHKEK, July 29 (AFP) - Fifty French troops and two refuelling aircraft are to be stationed at an air base in the Central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan to support operations in nearby Afghanistan, a French diplomat said Friday.

The French personnel and equipment will be stationed at the Manas air base close to the Kyrgyz capital from August 1 to November 6, France's senior diplomat in Kyrgyzstan, Eric Millet, said at a news conference.

"This is being done with the aim of supporting the process of parliamentary elections due to take place in Afghanistan on September 18," Millet said.

The air base was set up during the US-led operation to topple Afghanistan's Taleban leadership in 2001.

French troops are also based in neighbouring Tajikistan.
