PARIS, Feb 21 (AFP) - Gerard Jugnot, star of the Oscar-nominated film "Les Choristes" (The Chorus), was France's best-paid actor in 2004, knocking Gerard Depardieu off the top spot, according to a ranking drawn up by Le Figaro newspaper Monday.

Jugnot, who plays an inspiring music teacher at a school for troubled boys in 1949, also co-produced the film, which has been seen by nearly nine million people since its release last year.

Jugnot made EUR 5.45 million (USD 7.1 million) in 2004, ahead of Jean Reno on EUR 3.55 million and Depardieu with EUR 3.35 million.

The famously prolific Depardieu appeared in five films in 2004. "However, his name is no longer sufficient to guarantee the success of a film," Le Figaro said.

The highest-ranking woman was Audrey Tautou - star of last year's "Un Long Dimanche de Fiancailles" (A Very Long Engagement) and Tom Hanks' future partner in "The Da Vinci Code" - who was in 10th place with EUR 885,000.

"Les Choristes" has been nominated for best foreign feature at Sunday's Oscar ceremony. On Saturday it is up for the top French award, a Cesar, for best film along with "A Very Long Engagement".
