PARIS, July 27, 2006 (AFP) - The French unemployment rate fell by 0.1 percentage points to nine percent in June, the lowest level since April 2002,  official data showed on Thursday.

The figures from the French unemployment office revealed a drop of 26,500 in the number of jobseekers, putting the total number of unemployed at 2,186,000 during the month.

The unemployment rate has now fallen by 1.2 percentage points since February 2005.

French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin trumpeted the decline and reiterated his prediction that the number of unemployed in the country would be below two million "at the beginning of next year".

Villepin has put fighting France's stubbornly high level of unemployment at the centre of his premiership, reflecting what is the biggest worry for French people according to opinion polls.

"When we came in, a little more than a year ago, there were 2.5 million unemployed people in our country. We are today at 2.2 (million), 300,000 less over the last 12 months," he said.

"We want to go further, below the level of two million."
