Acclaimed Japanese conductor Seiji Ozawa, who is suffering from cancer, has cancelled a tour of Europe on advice from his doctor, his office said Friday.

The 74-year-old Vienna State Opera musical director had planned to travel to Prague, Vienna, Berlin and Paris for five concerts between December 3 and 10, an official said.

His appearance at Carnegie Hall in New York will go ahead as planned on December 14, she said.

Ozawa said in January he had been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and had cancelled work for at least six months to undergo treatment.

He announced the cancellation of more appearances in April but said he was recovering well.

The maestro has suffered ailing health in recent years, most recently undergoing emergency surgery for a hernia last year.

He has had a long career spanning the globe, spending nearly three decades at the Boston Symphony Orchestra before moving to Vienna in 2002.
