Ivory Coast's Gbagbo likely at presidential palace
Ivory Coast strongman Laurent Gbagbo is "probably" holed up at the presidential palace in Abidjan, where fierce battles are taking place with rivals forces, French ambassador Jean-Marc Simon told AFP Friday.
He said he had "good reason to believe" Gbagbo had left his residence, scene of heavy fighting recently, and moved into the presidential palace in a different part of the city.
"Yesterday (Thursday) afternoon we saw at least one boat filled with people leave the dock at the presidential residence in the direction of the Charles-de-Gaulle bridge," which is near the presidential palace, he said.
"We could not determine whether he was on board or not but we have good reasons to believe president Gbagbo has gone to the presidential palace."
Since Thursday heavy fighting has raged near Gbagbo's home in the suburb of Cocody as well as in areas near the presidential palace in the administrative district of Plateau.
