PARIS, March 6 (AFP) - A homeless man was crushed to death by a Paris metro train Sunday after falling on the tracks during a fight with two Chilean tourists, police said.

The man, who was not identified, had fallen on to the subway tracks after hitting one of the tourists and trying to avoid a counter-blow, officers said, adding that it appeared that it was "almost totally an accident".

The death occurred at the Saint-Michel station in Paris's central Latin Quarter. Traffic was halted on the metro line for more than two hours.

The two tourists, a father and his adult son, had been waiting for a train in the station when the homeless man approached them, police said.
