Italian ship caught dumping fuel in Mediterranean
French coastguards detained an Italian-flagged cargo ship which they caught illegally dumping fuel in the Mediterranean, marine authorities said on Friday.
The SDS Rain was caught on Thursday dumping fuel off the coast near the port of Marseille by a French customs surveillance plane. The vessel had left from nearby Fos-sur-Mer a few hours before, bound for Turkey.
The French navy rerouted the ship to Marseille, where it and its cargo were impounded by the coastguard pending payment of bail that can amount to several thousand euros, Marseille state prosecutor Jacques Dallest said.
"An investigation is under way to determine who is responsible," Dallest said.
