PARIS, July 18 (AFP) - French President Jacques Chirac will meet Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in Paris on July 27 for talks focused on the Jewish state's historic Gaza Strip pullout, Chirac's office said Monday.

The meeting will be followed by a working lunch, the Elysee said.

Last month, Chirac invited Sharon to visit the French capital for talks on the withdrawal of Israeli settlers and soldiers from the Gaza Strip, slated to begin in mid-August, as well as bilateral relations.

Since becoming prime minister, Sharon has only paid one official visit to France, back in July 2001.

Ties between France and Israel have been strained by Paris's criticism of Israeli tactics against the Palestinians, and by Israel's portrayal of France as a country in the grip of rampant anti-Semitism.
