JERUSALEM, Feb 14 (AFP) - Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said Monday that he hoped to convince France to classify the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah as a terrorist organisation.

"I am going to meet today with French leaders in the hope that they will come round to our point of view on the subject of Hezbollah before the discussions in Brussels on Wednesday on whether to include this group on the EU's list of organisations considered as terrorists," he said.

"We hope also that the French leaders will share our view on the negative role of (Hezbollah's sponsors) Iran and Syria," Shalom told public radio from Paris where he is expected to meet his counterpart Michel Barnier.

Israel has consistently lobbied for Hezbollah to be included on the EU's list of terrorist organisations which already includes Palestinian militant groups such as Hamas, Islamic Jihad and al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades.

The United States has included Hezbollah on its list of terrorist organisations since 1997.
