Israel court convicts couple of French child's murder
An Israeli court on Thursday convicted a local taxi driver of murdering his four-year-old French granddaughter and found the child's mother guilty of "soliciting" the killing, public radio reported.
The sentencing hearing is to begin on May 30 with the prosecution seeking life imprisonment for Ronnie Ron and Marie-Charlotte Renaud, his lover and former daughter-in-law.
Four-year-old Rose's remains were found in a suitcase in a murky river near Tel Aviv in September 2008, after weeks of intensive searches and speculation about a presumed murder that shocked Israel.
Rose's parents, Renaud and Benjamin Pizem, moved to Israel from France in 2004, but divorced the following year after Pizem discovered his wife was having an affair with his father, Ron.
Pizem moved back to France but Renaud stayed behind with Ron, who obtained custody of her daughter. The couple now have two children of their own.
Israeli police have described the case as "one of the most shocking in the country's history."
