DUBLIN, Dec 3 (AFP) - Irish customs officers seized 2.4 million smuggled
cigarettes after they arrived by ship from France, a spokesman said on Friday.

The customs said the Sovereign and Doncaster brand cigarettes, valued at EUR 740,000 (USD 980,000), and a Mercedes truck had been seized at the Rosslare ferry port in County Wexford, southeast Ireland.

The cigarettes were found hidden behind packages containing tables and
chairs in an unaccompanied container on a ship from the French port of Cherbourg.

"The find resulted from risk profiling. No arrests were made. Investigations are continuing," a statement said.
