PARIS, April 12, 2006 (AFP) - A senior French immigration official has been detained on suspicion of helping to smuggle illegal immigrants into the country, Paris police said on Wednesday.

Yves Riou, 39, a top official in charge of immigration procedures for north and sub-Saharan Africa, was arrested on April 3 and placed under judicial investigation, which is one step short of indictment in France.

Accused of supplying would-be immigrants with false papers enabling them to enter and remain in France, he faces charges of passive corruption and forgery, although he is not believed to been paid for his actions.

Around 15 people have been arrested in case.

The French government recently stepped up its efforts to combat illegal immigration — with an estimated 200,000 to 400,000 clandestine immigrants already living in the country.
