Authorities in Mali have arrested a radical imam suspected of having ties to Al-Qaeda's North African offshoot, a police source said Wednesday.

"He is a notorious fundamentalist... strongly suspected to have ties with AQMI" (Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb), the source told AFP.

"For the purposes of the investigation, we are not giving his name or his nationality for the moment," the source said.

Asked about the possible involvement of the imam in the kidnapping of two Frenchmen found dead in northern Mali on Saturday after an attack by French forces against the kidnappers, the source said: "These are unfounded rumours."
