MARSEILLE (AFP) - A young illegal immigrant believed to be from Senegal threw himself from the third floor of his apartment block in southern France on Tuesday after police turned up to collect unpaid rent, police said.

The young man suffered multiple fractures but will recover, a hospital official in Marseille where he was admitted said.

Police were called in to help the owner of the building collect unpaid rent from dozens of tenants when the man, fearing that police would ask to see his residency papers, jumped. The illegal immigrant had paid his rent.

President Nicolas Sarkozy's government has ordered police across France to crack down on illegal immigrants and reach the set target of 25,000 deportations by the end of the year.

A 51-year-old Chinese woman died in late September when she lept from the first storey of her building in Paris while trying to escape police.

A 12-year-old Russian boy was seriously hurt when he fell from the fourth-floor balcony of a building in the northern city of Amiens when police turned up to question his family who were residing illegally in France.

Between 200,000 and 400,000 illegal foreigners are currently living in France, according to government figures.
