IMF head's arrest bad for France's image: minister

France's reputation risks suffering from the arrest of French IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn on sexual assault charges, the minister for overseas cooperation said Sunday.

"I am not certain that for the reputation of France abroad this is a very positive moment," the minister, Henri de Raincourt, said in an interview broadcast on television channel TV5 and RFI radio.

The charges of sexaully assaulting and trying to rape a maid in a New York hotel room, "if they turn out to be true, are particularly serious in the circumstances," Raincourt added.

Strauss-Kahn is a major player in handling the 2008 financial crisis and its ongoing damage to the eurozone. Polls showed he was also the favourite to beat incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy in next year's French presidential election.
