Several hundred French filling stations were out of fuel on Friday, the Union of Independent Oil Importers (UIP) told AFP, as strikes against pension reform at oil refineries and depots began to bite.

"We have a large number of stations that are closed because there is no resupply," said Alexandre de Benoist of the UIP, which represents outlets at hypermarkets such as Auchan, Carrefour and Casino.

He said that several hundred stations were closed, though this represented "less than 10 percent" of around 12,500 petrol stations nationwide.

On Thursday, oil group Total, which has the largest network of petrol pumps in France, told AFP: "150 to 160 service stations are closed or have run out of one or several prodcuts."
