PARIS, July 31, 2007 (AFP) - A steady seven-month rise in French consumer confidence came to an end in July when a key indicator of household sentiment fell three points, official figures showed Tuesday.

The national statistics institute INSEE said its confidence indicator came to minus 15 this month, the first monthly decline since December.

The survey found that French households had grown pessimistic about prospects for an improvement in standards of living and in their own financial futures.

The only component of the index showing a gain in July measured attitudes toward chances of making major purchases.

Consumer sentiment on employment prospects remained stable.
