LONDON, Jan 16 (AFP) - British police opened an investigation Friday after a man was discovered with his neck ripped open aboard a ferry arriving from France.

The unidentified man, said to be in his 50s, was discovered alive but in critical condition Thursday evening in Dover, southeastern England, when the P and O ferry arrived from the northern French port of Calais.

"At the moment we are following a number of lines of inquiry," a police spokeswoman said. "We cannot tell yet whether it will be a criminal inquiry or not.

"We do not even know who the man is, but we are speaking to a number of people," she said.

The man was taken to Kent hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition Friday.
