Hollande warns of 'separatism' in Europe
French President Francois Hollande warned on Thursday that the "European project" was at the prey of "separatism", as Scotland held a historic independence referendum.
"If the European project is diluted, the door is open... to selfishness, populism and separatism," Hollande told reporters at a rare news conference.
Turning to Scotland, he said: "Who can say what the result... will be of this referendum, which could decide the future of the United Kingdom but also of Europe?"
He said he was in favour of a "multi-speed Europe in which the Franco-German couple is the motor of integration."
Scots flocked to the ballot box on Thursday to cast their vote in an epic independence referendum that could break up the centuries-old United Kingdom.
