PARIS, Aug 5 (AFP) - The French state-owned nuclear energy group Areva posted Thursday a 29 percent jump in first-half sales, boosted by the acquisition of the French engineering group Alstom's power transmission and distribution unit.

Areva reported first-half sales of EUR 5.339 billion (USD 6.432 billion) compared with EUR 4.138 billion in the same period the previous year.

"The main reason for this strong growth is the acquisition of the transmission and distribution division that was consolidated into the groups accounts at the beginning of January 2004," the company said in a statement.

Calculated on a comparable asset basis, the increase was only 1.4 percent. Areva finalised the purchase of the unit from Alstom in January for EUR 920 million.
