PARIS, March 23 (AFP) - A grenade thrown at a shop in a chic residential neighbourhood of Paris overnight caused damage but no casualties, police said Wednesday.

The device was hurled by two men who sped by the shop in the western 16th arrondissement on a motorbike in the early hours, officers said.

Seven parked cars and the windows of two shops, including the one apparently targeted, were damaged.

The culprits had fled the scene before witnesses could note the motorbike's licence plate.

Police said they did not know what the reasons behind the attack were, and were investigating to see if it was a settling of scores between criminals, an extraordinary act of vandalism, or with political motivations. An anti-terrorist unit was in charge of the probe.
