LYON, France, Aug 24 (AFP) - Dozens of graves in a Catholic cemetery in the southern French village of Saint-Jean-Bonnefonds were discovered vandalised Tuesday, police and the mayor said.

The act came two weeks after the desecration of a Jewish cemetery in nearby Lyon.

The mayor of Saint-Jean-Bonnefonds, Jacques Frecenon, said the vandals had broken flower pots and crosses but had not smashed the graves themselves nor had they left any messages.

Police were investigating, he said.

On August 9, swastikas and other neo-Nazi references were painted on 60 Jewish graves in Lyon. An unemployed 24-year-old Frenchman is in custody after telling police he carried out the crime for racist reasons.
