PARIS, Jan 22, 2007 (AFP) - The French government is to propose measures to counter the dangers of anorexia among girls who equate skinniness with beauty, Health Minister Xavier Bertrand said Monday.

Speaking as the haute couture fashion parades got under way in Paris, Bertrand said a working committee is to be set up soon comprising representatives from model agencies, consumer groups, clothes manufacturers and psychologists.

"It is important when young girls are looking at models to ask questions about the real impact of these images on people's behaviour. It is not normal for a girl of six to be already asking questions about her weight," he said.

Concerns about the example set by ultra-thin fashion models were heightened in November by the death of top-model Ana Carolina Reston in Brazil.
