PARIS, July 13, 2007 (AFP) - A French gendarme on Friday shot a colleague dead before killing his own two sons and finally turning the gun on himself, police said.

The incident took place at around midday local time (1000 GMT) in a gendarme barracks in the southern Paris suburb of Malakoff.

It was not immediately clear what had sparked the incident.

One of the children was aged 11, said officials, who did not give the age of the other son.

Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie went to the barracks after being informed of the deaths, officials said.

Gendarmes in France are military personnel who carry out police duties among the civilian population.
