Laurent Gbagbo's French lawyers were turned away from Abidjan airport Friday as they arrived to represent Ivory Coast's ex-president at his first hearing over post-election violence, an AFP journalist said.

Jacques Verges and Marcel Ceccaldi were refused entry and escorted to the departures area where they were to take the next flight to Paris, at 9:40 am (0940 GMT).

Gbagbo, who was arrested on April 11 at his presidential residence in Abidjan, was to appear for the first time Friday before a court in northern Korhogo, where he is under house arrest.

A preliminary investigation is under way over a violence-wracked power struggle following disputed elections in November 2010.
