PARIS, Jan 5 (AFP) - French public gas utility Gaz de France confirmed Wednesday there had been a leak in a main pipe near an apartment block where an explosion killed 17 people, saying that if this was the cause it would assume "full responsibility".

"Gaz de France will continue to contribute to the ongoing investigations to determine if the leak is a cause or a consequence of the accident" at Mulhouse, eastern France, on December 26.

"If the inquiry shows that this pipe was the reason for the accident, Gaz de France would accept full responsibility," it said.

The blast, which reduced the four-story building to rubble, was the deadliest in a residential block in France in 30 years.
